What is a Nameplate?

Nameplate. Label. Decal. Tag. Badge. Sticker. Medallion. What do all of these terms have in common? Any of them could be used when a product owner is looking to show off their brand identity. The term nameplate can be confusing.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, nameplate has a short definition which alludes to that thing outside of an office or placed on a desk with a person's name.

noun \ -ˌplāt\

: a metal or plastic sign that is attached to a door or wall and that shows the name of the person, group, or company that lives or works there

This definition is not within the scope of nameplates and labels produced for brand identity. A closer look down the page shows a fuller definition which is more fitting.

:  something (as a plate or plaque) bearing a name (as of a resident or manufacturer)
