Designing your nameplate to be in alignment with your branding strategy strengthens your brand message in the marketplace. While each nameplate or badge project presents its own unique set of challenges, there are some basic design elements to keep in mind to guarantee your brand message will be heard in the marketplace.
Three Elements of Great Nameplate and Badge Design
- Objective – When considering how your brand or logo will be identified on your product, it is important to think about your overall objective for your brand message. Does the emblem need to work across your product line on a variety of different colored products? Do you need a badge to stand out and catch attention? Are you looking for a refined elegant look? Is this an industrial label application that requires a durable tough look? These are some of the questions to consider when beginning the nameplate design process.
- Size and Shape - There are endless possibilities for the size and shape of your nameplate or label design. Many times your specific logo or graphics will provide visual cues which help you determine the appropriate shape for the nameplate. A block logo or font may be more appropriate on a rectangular nameplate. The nameplate can also be created in a silhouette of the logo with a minimal amount of background supporting the graphics. In addition, stock dies are available in a wide variety of sizes and offer a way to help control tooling costs.
- Budget – It's important to identify how much money is available in your project for branding. Projects with low budgets typically will want to explore designs using one or two colors to keep costs at a minimum. Two-toned nameplates are cost effective solutions. Selective areas of texture, brush, spin or other mechanical finish can be used for accent or dimensional looks. Piece price will increase as more processes are used. A tool for stamping, embossing or forming your part will also be required and can be a cost driver.
