The metal accents on the WCW Nitro Cologne bottle are a truly unique approach to fragrance packaging design. The aluminum side panels are decorated with a brushed finish and transparent tint of color. Embossed details are designed to mimic the studded leather costumes often worn by pro-wrestlers, creating a signature look.
Both side panels are formed to wrap the sides of the bottle in metal creating a unique combination of metal and glass. Heat activated adhesive is used to assemble the parts to the glass bottles and ensure a good bond.

This Sephora nameplate features a dimensional custom pattern highlighted by an embossed surface. As part of its 2009 campaign, the designers chose two varying looks for the encasement of the eye shadow palettes. Each look serves as a representation of the shadows inside.
Shown in two different color options, the blue is the "Calypso Soul Palette" which features five varying tones of eye shadow, including a blue slightly lighter than the cover. To achieve this look, the aqua blue ink is selectively screen printed leaving the pattern one-side bright which is then embossed . The white design is titled "Moroccan Sunrise Palette" and holds five shadows of varying mild brown tones with a metallic shimmer. Utilizing the same tooling, a white dye is paired with the transparent gold embossed pattern.
Although these nameplates are the same size and shape for both options, the color optimization gives a considerably different look and provides an easy product distinction.

In the February edition of ‘Guest Blogger’ by Estée Lauder, Emily of Cupcakes and Cashmere channels a historical era. In this blog, one of the appliqués created at Northern Engraving is featured. The blog titled “Sixties Saturation” encompasses the television series Mad Men, which brings back the styles from the nineteen-sixty era. In this period of time, a focus on refined beauty was prevalent. The recreation of this era’s style includes lined eyes, pink cheeks and ruby red lips and nails.
This featured part adds a touch of color while keeping the style qualities, including a focus on simple, refined beauty. The chic design is also encompassed in the subtle pale blue appliqué attached to the blush compact.

In addition to being fashionable, fragrance packaging must also catch the eye. Use of innovative materials such as aluminum is one way for brands to differentiate from competitors. The Abercrombie and Fitch perfume package incorporates a bright aluminum appliqué into the bottle design to coordinate with the polished chrome bottle cap. The anodized appliqué features etched graphics which create a tactile silver-on-silver look. The sophisticated, simple style of this design appeals to modern, young women.

A unique application of the doming process is used to add depth to this aluminum appliqué. It mimics the natural beauty of a ruby combining the naturally reflective metal substrate, a transparent tint of color and a contoured dome.
The metal appliqué is applied to the cap of the perfume bottle for Love by Ralph Lauren. It illustrates the versatility of aluminum as an option in fragrance and beauty packaging. How would you create an eye-catching appliqué for your next project?

Over the weekend, I was at the local Shopping Mall and decided to stroll into the PacSun store. I located this bottle of perfume that PacSun recently introduced. Northern Engraving manufactured the nameplate on the bottle.
The aluminum nameplate with raised ink, creates an embossed look. I love the silver nameplate on the clear glass bottle. PacSun's audience is young and on trend. Their focus is to stay true to their roots - which was a little surf shop in Newport Beach in 1980 - and offer what's next now.

Another way to achieve an embossed look on aluminum is to add a printed texture with gloss. The ink builds up and creates a texture that you can see and feel. This technique is often used on cosmetic nameplates. Screen printed texture is available in high or low gloss for a subtle background surface. A colored texture creates a more dramatic contrast in a pattern. Pinstripes and grids are popular patterns in product identification as well as subtle grains. In the Bronze Goddess nameplate above, printed texture is combined with a transparent gold tint which brings the nameplate to life.
Below is a recent nameplate that we produced for Kirra.
Kirra's New Blue Perfume's packaging is modern and sophisticated. The brand name on the namplate reflects the same sophisitcation by adding a printed low gloss texture over a low gloss aluminum surface.

Picture standing in front of an empty cosmetic retail case. Imagine a case with multiple shelves. Which shelf do you see first? Is it at eye-level; do you have to look up or down? Is it encased in glass? What is the lighting like?
Cosmetics are a great example of how brands use visual language with product design. They are widely used to enhance personal appearance and therefore need to speak to the end user at point of purchase.
Cosmetics are most often sold in a retail environment, side-by-side along with many other brands. Because of clutter, strategic product design helps consumers see brand logos.
Product placement is key, however good product placement is not easily controlled by the brand in complex retail environments. For this reason, it is very important to consider all the angles in which the end user may view the brand logo.
This simple aluminum nameplate design for Coach is an elegant example of strategic brand logo placement.
