Chemist Overall Purpose of Position

Reporting to the Laboratory Manager, the Research Chemist performs laboratory research used to develop new compositions, formulations, and solutions to find ways to optimize production processes, improve safety and quality, and reduce environmental pollutants.

Chemist Essential Duties and Primary Responsibilities

  • Utilizing expertise, develop an understanding of the relationship between material chemistry, formulation, mixing process, coating process and product performance
  • Seek continuous improvement opportunities for water based and solvent based topcoats, adhesives, primers, water repellants and other coatings which meet customer specifications
  • Develop new ideas and techniques for process improvements
  • Evaluate current processes and provide recommendations
  • Identify and solve process-related issues in a timely manner
  • Conduct experiments and tests requiring a high degree of technical understanding of chemistry and process technology, using appropriate safety guidelines and practices
  • Manage specification changes, provide assessment of new raw materials, and process changes
  • Define and establish laboratory goals, maintaining a clean, safe and organized work area
  • Prepare laboratory records and data sheets in a timely manner
  • Prepare technical reports based upon test findings
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge about latest developments in the chemical field and applicable regulations
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Chemist Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related field required, Master's Degree preferred
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience, preferably within interior/exterior automotive trim manufacturing environment
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong project management experience
  • Desire to work in a team oriented environment with excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required
  • Capacity to direct and supervise Laboratory Technicians to complete delegated tasks
  • Motivated, goal-oriented, self-starter
  • Ability to prioritize work assignments and meet project deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products, especially Excel and PowerPoint
